š Scar Care: How to Promote Healing & Reduce Discomfort
Your C-section scar is a reminder of the incredible journey your body has been through, it can feel tight, itchy, numb, or even uncomfortable for months. The good news? With the right care, you can help it heal properly, reduce discomfort, and improve its appearance over time.
Youāve probably already noticed that sneezing and coughing feelā¦different. Itās like your bodyās playing a cruel joke. Enter: the Pillow Trick.
1ļøā£ Keep It Clean & Dry
In the first few weeks, your main focus should be preventing infection and allowing the incision to heal externally.
ā Gently wash the area with mild soap and warm waterāno scrubbing! Pat dry with a soft towel.
ā Skip lotions and ointments unless approved by your doctorāsome can trap moisture and slow healing.
ā Wear loose, breathable clothing (hello, high-waisted underwear!) to prevent irritation.
š« Avoid baths, pools, and soaking your incision until your doctor gives the green light. Moisture buildup = infection risk.
2ļøā£ Scar Massage: A Game-Changer for Healing
Once your incision is fully closed and cleared by your doctor (usually around 6 weeks), you can start gentle scar massage to improve flexibility, break up scar tissue, and prevent adhesions (internal tightness).
Scar massage can be very beneficial after a C-section; it can help to decrease sensitivity around the scar, and help with scar mobility and remodeling. It is recommended to do this a few times per week.
This YouTube video from Lynn Schulte PT does a wonderful job explaining the how-to and the why of C-section scar massage. Do not proceed with the deep massage until your physio has given you the go-ahead.
šāāļø Use clean hands and a gentle oil (like vitamin E or silicone-based scar gel).
šāāļø Apply light pressure and massage in circular motions for 5 minutes daily.
šāāļø Gently lift and stretch the skināthis prevents it from sticking to underlying tissue.
Over time, this can reduce tightness, improve mobility, and even soften the scarās appearance!

3ļøā£ Reduce Itching & Sensitivity
Itching is a sign of healing, but it can be so annoying. Try these tips:
ā Apply a cool compress if itching is intense.
ā Wear soft, non-irritating fabrics (cotton is your best friend!).
ā Gently tap the area instead of scratchingāscratching can damage healing skin.
Some moms experience numbness or tingling for months (or even years). This is due to nerve damage during surgery, but gentle massage and time can help restore sensation.
4ļøā£ Minimize Scarring & Improve Appearance
While genetics play a role in scar formation, these can help:
š Silicone scar strips or gels ā Clinically proven to help soften scars over time.
š Stay out of the sun ā UV rays can darken scars, making them more visible.
š Stay hydrated & eat skin-healing foods ā Think vitamin C, collagen, and healthy fats!
Patience is keyāyour scar will continue to fade for up to a year or more.
5ļøā£ Know When to Call Your Doctor
Most C-section scars heal well, but sometimes issues pop up. Contact your doctor if you notice:
šØ Redness, warmth, swelling, or pus (signs of infection).
šØ Severe pain or a burning sensation near the scar.
šØ Bulging or tenderness (possible herniaādonāt ignore this!).
Your Scar = Your Strength šŖ
This scar tells a storyāone of resilience, love, and strength. Over time, it will fade, but the incredible thing your body did will always remain. Treat yourself with patience and careāyouāve earned it, mama. š
š“ How to Sleep Comfortably After a C-Section
Finding a comfy sleep position after surgery is not easy. Hereās what helps:
šļø Back Sleeping with a Pillow Under Your Knees ā Reduces tension on your incision.
šļø Side Sleeping with a Pillow Between Your Legs ā Great if youāre a side sleeper but need support.
šļø Reclined Position (Like on a Couch or Adjustable Bed) ā Helps if lying flat is uncomfortable.
Bonus Tip: Keep a pillow nearby to hug your belly when rolling overāit helps with stability and reduces discomfort!

𤱠Mom & Newborn Life Hacks
The One-Handed Diaper Change ā Keep wipes pre-pulled, diapers within armās reach, and use your forearm for extra baby support. Saves time and sanity!
š¼ Middle-of-the-Night Feed Prep ā Keep bottles, water, or a nursing setup ready to go next to your bedāless movement = more rest.
š Postpartum Station Setup ā Place essentials (diapers, snacks, water, meds) in multiple rooms so you donāt have to walk all over the house to find what you need.
